THE FIGHTING MASTERS FRIENDSHIP
GATHERING
Teacher and Student Rules and
Expectations
As stated elsewhere on this website, this Expo is promoted as a friendly
gathering for martial artists and is meant to promote the positive spirit
and discipline of martial practice. In that spirit we have outlined
the following rules, guidelines and expectations for all who attend - Teachers,
Students or Spectators.
First and foremost, this is an independent event and is not under the controls
or auspices of any outside people, schools, organizations, etc. For
those who might have the perception that they are better than the others
at the expo, or who have a perception that they have some control over this
event, we do not share their perceptions and they will be disappointed so
we encourage them not to attend.
We are a NO politics and NO ego event. In this event ALL teachers enter EQUAL.
No one person is greater or lesser than the next. A person may only
be made lesser by their own behavior, the manner in which they comport themselves
and/or their attitude, etc. It is very immaterial at this event, and to all
at it, about a persons perceived grandeur, perceived rank or their perceived
connections or relationships with others. Invariably we will stand on our
own 2 feet, ability and martial skills for others to see. By our words
actions and behaviour we will stand on our own merit or fall on our own demerit.
The following are things that are not acceptable behaviour at the event.
-
No "roughing up" students. Student safety is priority number one. Attendees
have not given their weekend and paid registration fees to be roughed up
or hurt. The well being and safety of students is paramount and always to
be given first priority. Martial arts is known for its health benefits, lets
keep it that way by not doing things that are injurious. This also
includes students, you are working with your partner as a "helper" and "coach",
it is not a game of one-up-manship so approach techniques carefully and
respectfully with safety in mind as well.
-
Students are expected to follow directions from teachers safely
-
Students failing to practice safely as instructed by the teacher, or using
excessive force, will be expelled from the event without refund
-
No negative, poison, and/or degrading talk about other styles of martial
arts
-
No negative, poison and/or degrading talk about other teachers or persons
-
No promoting an agenda that you are the only person doing a form/technique/style
the correct way
-
No promoting an agenda that you or another is the only person authorized
to teach a given style and that all others should be under your/their/whoever's
auspices or that you are the only one doing it correctly
-
No heckling the teacher that has the floor and is teaching, or heckling of
anyone at the event at any time.
-
No promoting of such ideas as your style is superior over all other styles
-
No being loud, disruptive, disrespectful or talking while an instructor is
talking during his or her presentation.
-
No macho aggressive behaviour
-
This is an independent event and is not under the control or auspices of
any outside organizations, no politics are promoted, encouraged
or tolerated.
-
Class participants and teachers have one relationship in class, student and
teacher or fellow students. All other relationships are to be left
outside of the classroom.
-
All teachers are equal - all students are equal.
To expound on the above, it is pretty much a given that we are each doing
what we do because we think it is the best, at least for us as an individual.
Trying to talk down and degrade other styles or person is not acceptable
and only reflects poorly on the person doing it. It is the same mentality
as "my dad can beat up your dad" - martial arts is about respect, a higher
frame of mind, discipline (of body mind and mouth) and healthier attitudes
than that. back biting and saying another person is no good, etc., is a sign
of insecurity. A person can stand or fall on their own merit or demerit and
people have a tendency to recognize other peoples capabilities on their own
without a word from anyone else or being put under the proverbial thumb of
anyone.
This is not an ego based event so all attending the event are considered
equal. While the efforts of all the teachers is sincerely appreciated
by all the attendees, one teacher will not be treated with preference over
another. This is not an "ego stroking" event.
The following is acceptable:
-
Giving out flyers about your classes during your presentation
time (there will also be a table on which you can put a few flyers. Giving
out flyers only applies to those doing a class at the seminar)
-
Giving out flyers about products you may sell (this also applies to
those doing a class at the seminar)
-
Having your products available for students to see and purchase (tables
are reserved for this and these activities should be conducted between classes).
-
Doing a great job presenting your class
Student behaviour:
-
Students should not be disruptive or distracting during the instructors
presentation and should remain respectful.
-
Students should train with safety in mind, both for themselves and towards
whoever they are training with, control is part of the discipline of martial
arts
-
Students who use undo force and will not follow instruction will be expelled
from the event without refund.
-
Students are not obligated to finish a class they have started if they are
not interested in doing so - however you should step out of the class quietly
so as not to distract anyone.
-
When students are uncomfortable with something, they have the option of not
doing those things which they feel uncomfortable with. Students should decline
doing those things in a respectful way and excuse themselves from the
remainder of class, teachers will respect their decision.
-
Students who cannot follow instruction and/or act in a respectful, acceptable
and safe manner will be told to sit out the class or leave the seminar.
-
If you are instructed to perform a certain technique at a certain pace or
speed then do so, if you cannot do so sit out that class.
-
Students using inappropriate force will be told to sit out the class or leave
the seminar.
These rules may be amended as it is deemed necessary.
Teachers/exhibitors who are teaching a class are encouraged to bring flyers
pertaining to their classes, activities or products and to place on
appropriate tables.
